have you tried the central-market, downtown l.a., i believe its on central ave and 4th , just be prepered to buy in bulk ! very fresh stuff .

lazydazy is absolutely right about 99 Ranch Market. They have tons of fresh live seafood and other kinds on ice.
If you ever feel the need to spend more money, you can find great quality and variety at the Santa Monica Seafood Company (1205 Colorado Avenue, Santa Monica). They actually distribute to local restaurants.

I always say it’s best to go straight to the source. Try going to the fish market in San Pedro. You’ll be able to check out the latest catch every morning, except for Sundays. I don’t think it gets any fresher than that.
