Sea Shepherd: Attention all Canadians Support the Harb Seal Bill

The Canadian seal hunt (or more accurately, massacre) took the lives of over 220,000 seal pups in 2008. This year, a smaller slaughter of seal pups has already begun: the grey seal slaughter in Cape Breton. The Canadian government has also announced the quota on harp and hooded seals for 2009: 294,000 harp seals pups (not including the quota for Canada’s Inuit people), and 8,200 hooded seals.

How do I prepare a whole fish that I buy from the market for dinner?

I buy seafood from a local market and they have many kinds of fish for sale, the whole darn thing right there on ice. How do I get it from there to a dinner ready version? Cut the head off? The tail? What about the insides? And the skin and bones?

Hopefully the fish has been gutted, or you’re in for trouble. If you’ve never filleted a fish before, it can easily become a horrible looking piece of meat. Sometimes when you buy a whole fish, you can ask them to fillet it for you. I personally don’t like to deal with the skin on fish, because of the scales, having to descale the thing. ( I always end up with scales EVERYWHERE)
But if you are determined to cook a whole fish, just stuff the cavity with fresh parsley, lemon, salt, pepper and throw it on the grill until its done. But like I said, you’ll still have to deal with the skin issue.

I would try the T&T Supermarket at the West Edmonton Mall or in the Chinatown area downtown around 95-97 th st and 100 th av. You want fresh fish, tuna, snapper, sole, octopus, squid and shrimp, salmon is fine but not the best for sushi, others like yellowfin are available in Asian fish or grocery’s, I used to live in Edmonton for 2 years in the 1980′s when I worked at the Chefs Table at 156th st and 111th av

The more food items you can prepare ahead of time, the calmer the actual picnic will be. Chicken breast or seafood kabobs can be bought fresh directly from the meat department of the local grocery store. Keep them cool until ready to toss on the grill. A side dish of brown rice can be served with the kabobs for a complete meal.

Dessert at a picnic usually consists of cake or some other sweet confection. Fruit salad is a healthy option on dessert. A combination of sweet fruits topped with coconut pieces or served with a fruit dip satisfies the sugar craving. Try grilled fruits like pineapples or peaches for a tangy tasting dessert.

Good Food to Offer Your Baby Turtle

When taking care of a new turtle the first thing you want to know is how and what to feed them. There is a variety of turtle foods that are available in different sizes and shapes and can be made with different ingredients. You can buy flakes and small pellet foods that are sold specifically for baby turtles.

The most common turtle foods that you can purchase are turtle sticks. These are great for any type of turtles including the babies. Water turtles will most likely need to eat the much larger floating pellets – but again they can be given to most other turtles.

One thing that we urge you never use are dried whole shrimp and bugs. The way that these are sold is very questionable and may not be safe for any turtles and especially the babies. There are shrimp pellets that can be used as treats – but not as a main source of food.

In order for your baby turtle to get all of the necessary nutrients and vitamins to stay healthy you can continue to feed them the sticks, flakes, and pellets. They have been made to contain all of these important and healthy nutrients to keep your baby turtle strong and well cared for. You can feed them cooked eggs and poultry as well as the shells.

If you need a slight substitute in the diet than you should consider fish foods. Many fish food have the same types of ingredients as turtle food. Don’t even waste your time trying to feed your baby turtle fruits and veggies. They won’t eat them. Other foods to stay away from are raw seafood and other raw meats. These contain too much fat and could make them sick with salmonella.

If you have any questions or concerns about what else to feed your baby turtle and where to buy the right turtle food than ask your veterinarian. Your vet will be able to give you all the instructions you need and can answer any questions that you have.
