is it ok to give dogs seafood and fish products? I’ve always been advised by my vet not to, yet I’ve noticed that it is and ingredient used in many varieties of canned dog food

keep in mind that it should only be one of many sources of protein you choose for your dog.
veterinarians are a poor source of information about dog nutrition since many vets get only a few DAYS of nutrition information in school and most of the studies are done or funded by the dog food companies that are trying to sell you their food. Do the research, make your own decisions!
You can give fish and seafood to a dog. But be prepared to clean up a bucket of loose crap from the living room.

you can feed a dog anything. except for chocolate… it’s deadly to them. the best thing is to feed them dogfood because their poop is easier to clean up.

well if your vet told you not to do so then you shouldnt, YES fish is used because of the omega fatty acids for beautiful coats but other nutrients (that are found in decent/good dog foods) are needed for a complete food nutrition..
i went to a pet store and saw dehydrated fish strips as treats but each dog s different, one might tolerate it while the other dog might get an upset stomach.

Is there a reason your vet said not to? If not, yes fish can be given to dogs. Avoid cooked bones. Also, wild salmonids (salmon, trout, etc…) from the Pacific NW must either be cooked or frozen solid for about a week before being given to your dog. They contain a fluke which is harmless by itself but it often contains a rickettsia (another parasite) that causes salmon poisoning in dogs. Farmed fish do not have these parasites. They are harmless to cats.
