Is there a Vegan or Vegetarian substitute for Fish Paste?
I m allergic to seafood and all fish products. I am cooking Vietnamese food with chicken instead of fish but the recipes still call for fish paste. Is there a subsitute for this that will give the dish the same flavor?
sesame paste, most asian stores have it. Its quite good actually, tastes similar.
sorry ..you are barking up the wrong tree……it is not an appropriate question for the vegetarian/vegan forum……

here is the closest recipe that I have
Faux Fish Cakes
Serving Size : 8
1 pound extra-firm tofu
2 cups cooked brown rice
1 small onion — minced
6 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes
2 tablespoons minced celery
2 tablespoons soy sauce — (2-1/2)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon dill weed
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
Pinch celery seed
1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
Mix the tofu, rice, onion, yeast and celery in a large bowl. Process the remaining ingredients, except for the flour, in a food processor until well blended. Add to the tofu mixture, along with the flour. Mix well. Form into 4-oz. patties and broil or pan fry for about 4 minutes on each side.

You just aren’t going to get a really good answer here because we’re not into fishy foods. Delete this question to get some of your points back and then re-ask in the Food>Ethnic category and they might have a better idea of what non-fish product would have the same taste!
BTW; I close all my answers like this, It’s *not* a slam at you<G>.

Vegetarians do not eat fish. A fish eater is a Piscivore. Spread the correct word!
