Fans who come to Atlanta, where Margaret Mitchell lived when she wrote the book, are often disappointed to discover that Scarlett O’Hara’s beloved plantation, Tara, was no more real than Scarlett herself.
But even though you’re not going to find Tara here, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a good time looking. Several local businesses, promoters, and Gone With the Wind fans will happily help you find your own little piece of antebellum romance. And if nothing else, you are sure to stumble across some real history in the process: the people, places, and events that inspired Mitchell’s work. Here’s the info:
In Atlanta, "the Dump," the Midtown apartment house in which Margaret Mitchell and her husband, John Marsh, lived when Mitchell wrote the novel, has been rebuilt and is now called the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum; the visitor center here contains photographs and some of Mitchell’s personal effects. Also in Atlanta is Mitchell’s grave, at the Oakland Cemetery in Sweet Auburn. Several Confederate generals and other historic figures are also buried in this Victorian-style cemetery-park dating to 1850.

Clayton County, approximately 15 mi south of Atlanta, promotes itself as the "Legendary Land of Gone With the Wind," since much of the novel was set here. The Clayton County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (104 N. Main St., Jonesboro, GA, 30236, USA. PHONE: 770/478-4800, http://www.visitscarlett.com )
highlights several sights and activities related to the book and film, including a Gone With the Wind tour (tel. 770/477-8864).
Clayton County’s Road to Tara Museum (104 N. Main St., Jonesboro, GA, USA. PHONE: 770/478-4800) houses props and reproduction costumes from the movie.
For some true Civil War history, visit the Patrick R. Cleburne Confederate Memorial Cemetery (McDonough and Johnson Sts., Jonesboro, GA, USA.) : this is the resting place of hundreds of Confederate soldiers who died during the 1864 Battle of Jonesboro.
The Stately Oaks Historic Home & Plantation Community (100 Carriage Dr., at Jodeco Rd., Jonesboro, GA, USA. PHONE: 770/473-0197) isn’t Tara, but it can reveal what life was like on a real plantation home. Costumed guides lead tours through the 1839 Greek Revival main house and several outbuildings.
In Barnesville, about 50 mi south of Atlanta, is the Tarleton Oaks Bed & Breakfast (643 Greenwood St., Barnesville, GA, USA. PHONE: 770/358-4989,
http://www.tarleton-oaks.com ), owned by Gone With the Wind cast member Fred Crane, who delivered the film’s opening lines as suitor Brent Tarleton. The B&B plays up the Gone With the Wind theme with a Hall of Stars Museum, which houses costumes, photographs, and the stars’ personal memorabilia from the film. The refurbished circa-1849 building served as a Confederate headquarters and hospital during the war and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Just a few miles north of Atlanta, the Marietta Gone With the Wind Museum: Scarlett on the Square (18 Whitlock Ave., Marietta, GA, USA. PHONE: 770/794-5576, http://www.gwtwmarietta.com ) houses book and movie memorabilia, including a gown worn by Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara in the film and copies of the book printed in several different languages. A display here is dedicated to the movie’s African-American cast members.

Yes, Palawan is considered the last frontier in the Philippines. It's pristine beauty stands out like a jewel in the whole Philippine archipelago. Thanks for the post. It will make people aware that there are many more wonderful destinations in Asia other than Phuket, Bali or Boracay. God bless you more for your efforts to disseminate information regarding the exotic tourist destinations in the Philippines.

everyone in chicago seems to feel they need a car, and it helps make for a vicious circle of complaining that public transport there doesn't take people many of the places they'd like to go, yet finds many not patronizing the system so that it could be fiscally able to expand to meet needs. every four years or so, there's a study about how to make the MTA solvent, more interconnected with metra, but as long as car ownership reigns supreme, it's kind of a moot point. the result is often restrictive parking and unabated traffic.

Quote: >For comparison, a Maine teacher would have to work for more than 25 years to receive this level of benefits. >Confidential employees, those that are not represented under union collective bargaining, also are not seeing their salary contributions increased to the same rate. They’ll continue to pay just 3.65 percent of their salary to the pension fund. >At the same time that most employees are to be forced to increase their contributions, the state will reduce the amount it pays into the retirement fund.
I didn’t “land” this — I didn’t seek it and don’t particularly want it. Folks in the media in several English-speaking countries abroad have been contacting me repeatedly for the last couple of days, and when contacted I try to say “Yes, I would be happy to do that” with the goal of improving the reporting available in English and averting panic. As to why I’m suddenly several reporters go-to guy for this? The biggest reason is that I speak English and am accessible. They know about me because my blog post on Sunday got widely distributed abroad. (I suspect many of them follow Jimmy Wales, who retweeted it.) My blog has working contact information on it. Also, since the media are pack animals, as soon as anybody quoted me then I was a Certified Expert (TM) and so everybody else should quote me, too.
Peace Nate! You may be? gone but never will you be forgotten…
Our courtesy car was free as well, we just gave them some money for gas. I guess I will have to start investigating popular haircutting destinations if that is what it will take to get up flying more often. There must be some more exotic destinations than Glenwood, Minnesota. I wonder what a haircut goes for in Duluth, Minnesota I always wanted to fly there again.

I think you’ll find that’s often the case in any rural area, and given that Maine is the most rural state east of the Mississippi, I don’t think they’re doing too bad.

An American tourist last year ran into a cyclist in Copenhagen. The witnesses, the police and insurance companies all agreed that the driver was at fault, the cyclist was awarded compensation for damages, and all was as well as could be.
But since the tourist had paid his/her insurance policy for the rental car with an American Express card, this company now tries to get compensation from the cyclist to cover the damages to the car.
What kind of logic makes people think that the cyclist should pay after being knocked over in traffic?
