what recipes can I use imitation seafood crab in?
Can I use imitation crab in recipies that call for "shredded lump crab"? Should I use real seafood crab in a can as subtition for shredded lump crab? Any websites I can go to for recipies? Thanks!
No, don’t use imitation crab for shredded lump crab. If you must substitute, then use a can of real crab meat, drained well in place of the shredded lump crab. Imitation crab should be used in place of cooked crab meat. I have a quick & easy cheeseball recepie that is great for parties using the imitation crab.
Take 1 pkg imitation crab & chop coarsely. In mixing bowl take 3/4 pkg ( 8oz) cream cheese @ room temp, 1 pkg finely shredded cheddar – sharp or mild, 1 tbsp worchester sauce & a good sprinkle of dried chives. Mix all together – easiest by hand, then shape into a ball or rectangle. Roll in chopped pecans & serve with assorted crackers. It’s wonderful.
Imitation Crab Salad
6 eggs
1/2 (1 pound) loaf sourdough bread, cubed
1 pound imitation crabmeat, flaked
3 stalks celery, chopped
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons sour cream
salt and pepper to taste
Place eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil. Cover, remove from heat, and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool, peel and chop.
Trim crust from bread and dice into cubes.
In a large bowl, combine the bread cubes, eggs, crab, celery, onion, mayonnaise, sour cream and salt and pepper. Mix together well and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Whenever my mom makes crab rangoon, she always uses imitation crab meat. I think for things like that where it’s not a big deal, crab meat is cool. Otherwise, I’d at the very least get crab in a can (like tunafish). Lump crab is always better in my humble opinion, but man alive… it’s expensive!!

I wouldn’t use the imitation stuff. It isn’t near as good as fresh. If you have to substitute, I would go with the canned. At least that is real crab, not the fakey kind. It also depends on what you are making, imitation is commonly used in some types of sushis, but I would never use it in crabcakes. What are you making?

I don’t know about the websites, but I am an experienced cook. The imitation crab meat does not do very well in dishes that are cooked. My buds at the chinese buffet make a great dish that uses boiled shrimp, fake crab and cheese. But it is not heated above the temp of the steam table.
Most commonly you will find the imitation crab in seafood salad where everything is mixed together cold. Dice celery, onion and imitation crab. Stir together with mayo, garlic salt & pepper and you will have a great side dish to plop on a few leafs of lettuce.
Sprinkle with some paprika for presentation.
