Allergic to seafood, how do I cook it?
I’ve been allergic to Seafood my whole life, when I eat I get really sick. Well my boyfriend absolutely loves it; it is by far his favorite food. We live in Alaska so the freezer is always full of salmon, halibut, trout, and rockfish. Here’s the problem I do all of the cooking (cause I love to cook), and he never, ever complains that I don’t cook fish, but I know he misses it, cause when I attempt to cook (and fail miserably) he praises all of my failed efforts. I’m the kind of cook that I don’t measure anything I do everything by taste and smell, and I can’t cook fish because I can’t taste it. I would love to start reintroducing fish into his diet so I’m looking for some bomb proof but super good recipes, or just some tips on how to cook the water critters can anyone help me?
It is not just fish it is any seafood I get sick off of. I don’t get sick from touching it, I can consume very small amounts (very very small) with out getting ill, but pretty much anything bigger then a quarter will make me ill. My brother is the same way, yes shellfish is a common allergy mine is less common but people do have it.
He doesn’t cook his own fish because I do all of the cooking in the house, I love to cook; my mom and I actually use to have our own catering service, so I do know a lot about sanitation, well wait I would say more then most people. Too me there is little better then the look of pleasure on someone’s face when they are eating something I made just for them. I love it, that’s why I want to cook the fish, and do it well.
I don’t eat fish either, but I know that certain flavors go with fish, like butter, dill weed, lemon maybe garlic….and white wine LOL, so if you stick with these I think you can work it out. Salmon is probably the easiest because I understand it taste good all by itself….smoked on a cedar plank on a grill or in the stove (soak the plank in water tho) read around the you know what dill and lemon and butter taste like so you can do something. But I know what you mean because I don’t eat it but I have cooked filets for my brothers and they said it was good…..flour salt and pepper and when it was don’t some lemon wedges LOL….I wasn’t gonna taste it tho. Stuff one with lemon wedges and dill weed and put some salt on it and wrap it in foil and put it in the stove. Do a lot of that, LOL
That’s odd; I’ve never heard of a fish allergy. SHELLFISH, yes; allergies to shrimp, lobster, and crab are quite common. Are you sure that you’re actually allergic to fish?
EDIT: Hmm. Well, my mom makes fish all the time without tasting to see if it’s cooked. We have a griddle that works great. Salmon steaks with lemon pepper is a great recipe; it’s delicious, easy to prepare, and it’s pretty easy to know when it’s cooked. ^^;

Well, if you want to cook fish, then you will have to measure it; if it effects your skin, you’ll have to wear those white gloves so you don’t get any rashes of some sort. Good luck!

Why can’t he cook his own seafood? Back in culinary school I saw a few students that were cooking seafood, but not eating it, suffer from seafood allergy reactions and it wasn’t pretty. Unless you’re an expert on sanitation and ways to reduce cross-contamination I think you should just stay away from it.

My husband hates fish, but here’s a couple of websites:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipes/Seafood/Fish/Main.aspx
http://www.fish4fun.com/seafoodrecipes.htm
http://www.seafoodfish.com/
Read ‘em and see which ones sound bomb proof.
I’m sure he’ll appreciate your effort!

it is very sweet of you to want to do this for your man.
I suggest you try some of the recipes at http://allrecipes.com/
they have really easy to follow instructions and comments included from those who have tried the recipes.
the key with most fish is only to cook it long enough to make it firm and no longer opaque (semi see thru) try slicing into one fillet until you get the feel for how long one takes to bake, fry or however you are cooking it.

I can completely understand. I am just allergic to shellfish, but it is my husband’s favorite food. I love to make it for him, especially for special occasions, but I have to be extra careful when I do. I use rubber gloves, but not the thin ones. For me, even the first aid latex gloves are not thick enough. I actually use dish gloves and they are nice and thick and work wonderful. Just make sure that once you put the gloves on you do not touch your face or arm. If you are looking for good fish recipes, I would try allrecipes.com or foodnetwork.com. I also have gotten a few great seafood cookbooks at major bookstores, especially Barnes and Noble. I am not sure if you have any near you, but even online you can find some great bargins on seafood books. Hope you find what you are looking for. Good Luck!

grilled fish.
marinade the fish in some italian dressing and a few dashes of old bay seasoning for an hour or so, and then grill it. i personally like to do this to tilapia.

You have a great looking site. I have read a lot of these posts and they have come in use. I have visited many blogs and it seems like most of the information sounds generic or is copied from other site and I can’t ever get useful information or information that is even worth the time that I spend reading it. I myself run several blogs and forums. Most of my blogs pertain to animals,to be more specific, dogs. I have checked out your site and absolutely love it. I would like for you to visit some of my blogs. I know that you probably don’t want me posting all my links here and I do not want you to feel like I am spamming you so therefore I will not leave a bunch of links. However, if it is okay with you, I would like to post a link to one of my most successful sites. The main component of my site is vbulletin forums. I also have a blog on this site along with a function that allow members to enter their dog’s pedigrees. The pedigrees show up in a four generation site where every dog name is a link to that dog’s four generation pedigree. I would really like for you to check out my site and let me know your thoughts on it and ideas or suggestions for improvement. I am especially interested inyour input on my blog because this seems to be your specialty. My site URL is http://www.PetPedigreeDatabase.com/
