The man in the toy …
The man in the toy car, David is my best friend’s uncle. The picture he looks at right at the beginning is the band’s drummer and at the end you see Polly, David’s daughter.

I really do think Nicholas Sparks ripped the plot and themes for his A Walk to Remember. Sparks won't ever be Segal. I mean, this is my first Segal, and it's a thin book, but he owns Sparks, for god's sake. I'm okay with cheesy, but Sparks is so formulaic. I suppose I like this “distillation” of Segal. He used an age-old story, but told it so simply and so heartfelt, that, well, there.
This one's cover is partly why I gave in and bought it. It's pretty, yes, and the cover is matte so it looks and feels nice too.

The way I understand it is that your hand will drop the signal by a certain percentage, not completely. If the signal indication is optimistic then you do not have a clue that you might be in a weak signal area in which your hand is significant in getting you disconnected when it would only reduce the signal but still allow calling in a strong signal area. It is a problem when all signal indications look strong.
I think the average reader will put up with some of the things you mentions–things like shifts in tense and the opening monologue. Sparks' voice seems to be enough.
My wife is really enjoying Sparks' work. She has openly wondered where Mr. Sparks' heart is regarding Christ. In the semi-biographic book where Sparks and his brother go off on a world sojourn, the issue of faith figures prominently. From what my wife told me, it sounds like both Sparks and his brother have had their struggles. Hopefully these struggles led them ultimately back into faith.
An aside, reading Sparks' books has been something of a catharsis for my wife. She's married to an author who often has tight deadlines, so when she reads about Sparks' and his wife…how they attempt to balance the demands of family, love, and writing–it helps my wife to understand and emote.

Mark, it depends on how you are thinking of the “signal”. It seems to me, you are suggesting the “signal” is the “growth rate” or some such of the tree. However, people who are using proxies in multi-proxy studies are treating the proxies as if there is a “temperature” signal in there somewhere (presumably along with a precipitation signal, a CO2 signal, a fertilizer signal, an insect strike signal, etc. etc.).
Actually, the growth rate is the “observation.” The “signal” would be temperature.

At a past restaurant job we had to take a quiz on some menu items. One of the questions were: “Why isn’t our calamari dairy free?” The answer was: “Because we soak it in whole milk.” One of the girls I worked with had no idea what the answer was so and friend of mine gave her this wonderful explanation that she believed: “Well actually nothing in the ocean is dairy free because of whales. Since they are mammals they lactate and therefore all seafood is 1% dairy.” The girl proceeds to write this on her quiz thinking this is logical. When my manager reads it he thinks that he can’t read her writing and asks if the word whale is actually the word whole. She goes on to tell him the story of the lactating whales making the ocean 1% dairy… Funniest thing I’ve ever seen!

I can't believe people saying that people are saying a 20db loss of signal is acceptable for holding your phone…
The db scale isn't linear, it's logarithmic. You lose near 95% of your signal while holding it.
Apple's mapping of signal strength to bars wasn't done well, true. But correcting it to better show the user their signal strength isn't going to fix the flaw with the antenna.

Especially in LA, the land of Sushi with a eatery on every other corner (particularly in West LA). Seems at the very least, they would want to focus on a resource like the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Card, which now comes in a specific flavor for the LA palette: Sushi Seafood Watch Card .

I have friends and family that live in Louisiana. One buddy and I had an indepth conversation about seafood. He said most of the Gulf seafood being sold in Louisiana now is from the Galveston area, in other words, West of the disaster areas. It's still Gulf seafood, just not “Louisiana” seafood.
He and I have heard conflicting reports about the Gulf and the seafood. He's waiting several years before he'll eat any Gulf seafood again, no matter who says what. I agree.
