Special Tiny Anchovies in Phuket

Intro: Visiting a resort island like Phuket, you may want to look for processed seafood souvenirs. Our special report today has some suggestions.

Tape: The crispy fried tiny anchovy with high calcium and iodine mixed with herbal spices reportedly contain high nutrition value and are popular among Thai and Asian consumers such as Singaporeans and even Australians. Local processed seafood in Phuket is available in many shops including the Pornthip Sea Store Outlet located on the By pass Road, a few minutes from the Tesco- Lotus junction near the city. The most popular flavor is said to be an original ‘Tom Yam’ flavor. The operator Khun Weerawat said the demand almost surpasses the supply in Asia.
He went on to explain that during this high season, his company is eyeing the Middle Eastern market as they have high consuming power. The company highlights its ‘Tiny Anchovy Mixed with Tamarind’ flavor which has proved to suit the market’s taste.

Khun Weerawat said ‘We focus on Middle East markets as they have high spending power. The Asian market already responds well to our products while the producers are working on taste / flavor development. WE are now eyeing more into the Middle East market.’
This year the sales of processed seafood products in Phuket are growing in opposite direction of the economy. The processed fish and shrimp products in particular are most popular among visitors. This is due to its great varieties in form and flavor, plus the stylish packaging. In 2009, Phuket’s processed seafood products and local OTOP One Tambon One Product- generated over 625 million baht in revenue for the whole province.

Khun Weerawat went on to say that the tiny anchovy products are in demand for consumers across the globe. He said he had to admit that his company has a production limit due to the fish or raw material itself.
He said: ‘We as small SME entrepreneurs have to compete with overseas companies to purchase the tiny anchovy. Companies from Japan, Republic of Korea, Taiwan and Singapore come in to purchase the fish from here and we do not have high capacity to purchase a big lot of the tiny anchovy to keep in stock. The processed tiny anchovies are in big demand from overseas. I can say that the supply cannot meet demand.’
Weerawat’s comment is similar to the Provincial Chief of Community Development, Khun Somsak Songnui, who pointed out that the processed seafood accounts for 80% of product sales each year.
Located in a tourist location, operators are not solely fortunate for the resources, but they need to work on creativity and development either in the form of marketing, packaging and quality. The Pornthip Sea Store is only one good example among many local companies which has shown to carry out high quality production and is certified according to HACCP- Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points. The company under the brand ‘Pornthip’ is recognized for its excellence in product development leading it to have won several awards including Prime Minister’s Export Awards 2009.

Kata Beach Phuket Market Fresh Seafood

http://www.phuketdining.com
Kata beach fresh seafood market is an excellent place to go when you are looking for some fresh cheap seafood that you are going to cook or BBQ yourself. I love going to open markets you can find just about any type of Thai cuisine ingredient and of course fresh seafood.

The seafood is as fresh as it gets, most off the seafood is only hours from either the ocean or farm, not days ago like seafood you might find in some of the big grocery chains. If you want to save a ton of cash on your food bill the open markets are the deal, I frequent the Kata Beach market all the time partly because my condominium at the Aspasia Phuket is only a few minutes away from the market so I am a regular customer. We just load up the car with plenty of fresh seafood, veggies and fruit to last the week, although last year I had to buy an extra refrigerator to help with the storage, but it was well worth it considering how much cash we can save by cooking it ourselves.

I learned to cook quite a few Thai dishes over at Pat’s Home Thai cooking school and that was a really big help. If you’re wondering where all the resorts and restaurants get their fresh food just go to the open market I am constantly running into chefs from various resorts picking up fresh ingredients for their restaurant menus.

Here is a short video clip of the seafood section at the Kata Beach open market, keep in mind this is only a small selection compared to some other Phuket markets that I have been to. Once you are in Phuket go to the market they truly are a unique experience and a whole lot of fun.
